STATE'S ATTORNEY
The primary duty of the Tazewell County State's Attorneys Office
is prosecuting all violations of state law which occur within Tazewell County.
Among several additional duties, the most important is advising all branches
of county government on all legal questions which arise and representing
them in court when necessary.
The criminal prosecution function is accomplished by the State's
Attorney and Assistant State's Attorneys. The State's Attorney,
Chief Assistant and Felony Assistants perform most of the work in Felony
Court. There are also Assistants assigned to each of the courtrooms
dealing with Traffic, Misdemeanor, and Juvenile prosecution.
The Deferred Prosecution Division is administered by a program
director who is assisted by a counselor/investigator and clerk. The
program is designed for first time offenders and has a highly regarded success
rate in recovering restitution and reducing recidivism.
The county legal advisor function is performed by the State's
Attorney, Chief Civil Assistant and special assistants appointed for specific
cases. The State's Attorney represents the County in both state and
federal court.
The staff of attorneys is supported by full-time legal
secretaries and one paralegal. In addition, trained staff members assist
victims of crimes through the Victim/Witness Program. The office also has
a criminal investigations division comprised of three investigators.
